A night spent on Evergreen
Steeple, Evergreen, Roboter, at Barfly, 16th February 2024
A cover played on steple, a bassist who informs the crowd about an issue, and a band that covered weezer. Yet for Steeple, altough their acclaimed Nirvana cover wasn't at it's best, they still manage to doll you up and tickle your body to get you moving. Evergreen, got to play one of their hardest show ever, was it due to the frontman Matteo's new guitar? Possibly but the venue named The Barfly helped out I believe with it's small size, people could radiate across others their energy and happiness. I also believe that their new song was the gasoline we needed to simply let loose. Finally Roboter were well, the Weezer all reved up you never taught you would needed to hear. The show was set for eight o'clock on the flyers but only started at nine o'clock at Barfly. Had the time to realize how small the venue was, with half of the walls covered with Canadians banners dating from their glory days. After a couple of chats with Steeple, Evergreen and people coming to see the show, their is a soundcheck, volumes are ajusted while Evergreen play bits of a song, and there it is, a burst of sound blowing our eardrums. I know immediatly that this night will be crazy.
Finally, nine o'clock strikes and a guitar can be heard buzzing, the crowd starts chanting Steeple, and the night rolls off. Steeple are great, playing originals, and covers such as Just from Radiohead and In Bloom to finish with by Nirvana. Just was just incredible pardon me for the phrasing. Truly once again Mathias at guitar and the singer Syd just blew my mind away. My friend came along and he normaly goes to more mainstream concerts, but this rendition of Just got him real impressed. He looked at me and said, 'Man I tought it would just be a average
concert with nothing too crazy going on but I'm truly impressed.' Syd sang confidently during their performance, it felt like she was ready to defy anybody who would dare slow them down as they played. Sadly for In Bloom, things got a bit more stiff and a couple of anomalies drifted along but again, Steeple nailed it as openers.
Around ten fifteen, Evergreen march up on the stage, looking all grungy with their hair in their face while tuning themselves loudly just to make sure their the loudest and asserting themselves as loud motherfuckers who don't care if the crowd goes deaf. While Matteo finishes tuning his new guitar, an Aria Dm 206 as seen in the picture on the right, Hans the bassist proceeds to clarify to the audience a misunderstanding or argument he had with someone but in the end sadly the crowd never got to understand much of what was said. Matteo's rallies his band and they tear the roof off as they start their first song. they cover Nirvana's Silver, they play a new song that is yet to have an official set in stone title and play some of their songs we've moshed to previously. But the big highlight of their set was the reaction of the crowd. People went crazy, stagediving went on, moshing, lifting people up in the crowd and a whole lot of laughter and breath catching was heard and seen along their set. Once again, I stand my point when I say that they truly know how to set the night on fire. For kids aged around 20 and less, they surely bare such a weight on their shoulder in the rock/metal scene. After the set, while smoking cigarettes and talking my friends tells me he hasn't had that much fun in a while at a concert moshing and just rocking the fuck out. Which is just another reason to say that Evergreen are part of a revolution to come in the scene that is mainly dominated by acts who wish to show a carefree attitude towards the intensity and energy they put in their songs. This band cares about it's crowd and truly wants to make sure everybody is ransacked by the end of their performance.
Finally the final act was Roboter. Someone must've listened to Artic Monkey's and then fell on Gorillaz and hence was born the great Roboter. So basically they're Indie rockers but with a bit more intensity than say Artic Monkey all the while managing to keep a very Indie look onstage. They were great, not particularly ear catching to me, but again, I ain't very indie. But as for the ones who came to see them, I clearly have noticed they were satisfied along the road especially with a Weezer cover issued during their performance and in general a performance that drew the bridge between their live act and their studio recordings. Personally, I don't quite understand why though would they want to play a set so relax right after a band like Evergreen just shambled everything on their path.
So to round off things, well it was once again a great night, I cannot wait for Steeple and Evergreen to grow to a bigger audience, bigger performances and greater recognition. They have got luggage full to carry around whatever they'll need to offer. They've got the guts, the talent and the energy and besides they've also got youth on their sides. As for Roboter, they manage to set in stone their image as performers who could go beyond their soft mellow studio sound, trespassing their lightness and giving us some meat to beat on and some grooves to dance our friday night away. Soon to be, Evergreen will be back in two weeks from their last post seen, yet location and exact date is unknow. For Steeple, there are no shows announced yet and for Roboter, dates to come at yet to be announced also. Bravo to all bands once again and see you at the next show around.
