Fractured - Shades of Despair Single
Fractured - Shades Of Despair Single Review
Listening to Shades Of Despair’s single Fractured, I realized two things. God am I glad I live in Canada, because when they’ll play it live, you’ll surely be leaving the night with a fractured bone if not skull. Secondly, it reminded me of my high school years listening to Cognizant Castigation by Vulvodynia and damn does it feel good to hear, realising that to this day, I am always shook at the vocal prowess of these singers.
Many metal, death metal or any sub genres try to imitate a sound and use it as a template. They’ll target certain cues to align their recording with, hoping the listeners jump right in as they hear those little nods. But most of the time, it simply loses the soul purpose of the genre, because if you don’t end up putting your touch to the music you create, then AI might as well do it for you, especially nowadays. And with this single, Shades Of Despair aren’t afraid of serving a dish slightly altered. The song starts with a siren sounding riff, with the drums and vocals adding to the general chaos reminding me of Eyeless from Slipknot or even the famous intro 742617000027. The ears are then served various sweet licks and screams ranging from fry-screams to tunnel throat screams and of course, sick breakdowns! What really blew my mind was the production, for a first single everything sounded so sweet, well balanced and punchy and the ending of the song was to my ears, a memorable one worth the listen. All of this fierce, stomping, devilish quality and creativity was brought to you by Alex Tucker on guitar, Andrew Couture on vocals, Mathieu P. Blais on drums and Gabriel Tessier behind the bass and the mixing, recording board.
Their debut album will be coming out soon enough, and they’ve just dropped an incredible clip filmed and edited by Audrey Patenaude. Rumour has it, more incredible content will follow up with the album! Until then, we hope they’ll have live dates dropping to see them in action. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I might’ve fractured a couple bones.
