DoomsDays Fest a prequel to Avenger's Doomsday
DoomsDay festival, a festival only two years old, yet they've made quite a place for punks and rockers and mostly moshers to go hang out and forget all about the outside world.
Their first edition was such a great success last year, they had the courage to restart it this summer. This year's lineup featured, CIDB, BRAINDOWN, HIGH ANXIETY, CITIZEN VICIOUS, TAXI GIRL, DIVINE BLOODLINE, HOOD RATE, LA GACHETTE, RATPISS, POSTLUVEN, VAS-Y LINE, CHÛZO, WODOS, CRACHAT, SMOKESPELL, DOWNTOWN FIASCO, SELF CONTROL, JAIL, MORSURE, REACTION, THEE SOREHEADS, SCARLET WIVES, PSYCHOTIX, THE LAST ROCKERS and finally BARBE A PAPA. A lineup featuring bands who have been around the ranging from the last five years to new formed bands. This said, the festival is only accessible for those who knew the location, there's only an Instagram page about it so it's fair enough to say that they want it for the people, no posers no bullshit and they want to stay local and I would add underground in a way. Well most of the checklist was check, except one, the bullshit.
Performances during each day was handled fairly well, for independant people, the equipment and handling went well. It was great to know that although they don't have big corporates, they can still make a totally workable and accessible festival for those in the metal and heavier genres of rock community. It also is cool because Heavy Montreal is now gone for more than five years and there isn't any way to see so much bands for so cheap knowing you could pretty much pay with what you had altough they did suggest a donation of 20$ if possible. So knowing all of that, how could it slowly transform every participant into wild ruthless survivors à la Lord of The Flies. Was it the heat, the heated discussions, the handling, the drugs, the alcohol or a mix of it all injected with a bit of savagery? Where the media right back then to say that metal is the Devil's music, that it can drive kids to try and kill each other or suicide?
A fight erupted between people, cigarette were thrown to one another. It eventually evolved into death threats. I wasn't there to witness it. Yet I organize shows, I try and create a community around the youth so there are places to organize shows and leave all our problems behind. So here's what I'll say about it. There where things that shouldv'e been resolved, some tried running away with a bit more than they should've of, some got to have conflict of interests but that, no matter where it'll happen. I believe as kids, we believe no unfair bullshit should happen and that if ever it would be the case, it has to be dealt with so it can't happen again. True, but menacing someone of killing em' won't fix anything. It's as bad as the Montreal cops' cases and all assholes the youth points out. Yet it happened at this festival. By the end, some burned someone's hat, just like in Lord of The Flies, they celebrated a victory that never was. Some cried, some were happy to have come out as the strong ones, but what about the community. No one knows who's right and who's wrong, but some just wanted to satisfy their ego and think they were the strong ones. But these things can't keep happening, there is always a way to talk through whatever happens, it needs to be this way to set an example, to keep a clean and safe image of the scene. So many around me claim the scene is dying because of people thrashing concert venues, people pissing on others for no reasons and most of all, a lack of unity. Yet everyone claims to be a punk who want's nothing but the best and only good vibes. The question is, what will happen to the festival next year, can violence be overcome, is the Hippy Dream that I dream of every day really dead? Must violence, battons and pocket knives be held close in case of another outburst of unfairness and lack of communication? Can the scene feel safe? Can the kids abstain themselves from being savages? If we want those initiatives to be recognized, if we want the outdoor shows to stay a viable practice, accidents like these must be handled better that's for sure. And by being violent and taking sides, theses people are contributing to the bad reputation of the scene and most of all, by the end surely, their problem is still not solved. May you all be nice and civilized to one another.
