August 31th, Downstairs at La Sottorena or whatever it's called! War Doves, Evergreen and The Snatchers
On Saturday August 31th, I'd finally decided to plunge back in the scene and dab my hands at those rockers and mockers trying to take the spolight and maybe get a deal, feel the breeze of the amps and everyone out of stage enjoying their time forgetting their lousy lives. Up at la Sala Rossa was Bad Objection, Drive By, Excess, Street Justice, Scaramanga, and Skull Gate. Downstairs in the same building was War Doves, Evergreen, and The Snatchers.
Lets go downstairs for now, where youth is stiff, and waiting for action. It's dark, loud, noises are issued and I can't understand so I jump in and am greeted by folks of The Snatchers, Evergreen and many more friendly faces. Since seeing both shows, money was thight and so I buy tickets and my friend Jonathan buys the beer just like any young school going kid trying to wash out problems and hardships at shows many nights a week. So by the time I've got the beer in hand Matteo from Evergreen comes out of nowhere and asks me if we shall sing Wonderwall together to have a good laugh and remind people THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD IS BACK IN TOWN. Tickets for Oasis are around 148 pounds standing up, while clapping hands and getting asked by Liam to lift a girls shirt before they keep the show going and if lucky enough, you might get spat on who knows how the lad feels. But tonight, everything'll be calm and ordored that's how My Generation likes it. Respect others, don't go agains't their will and surely just sing along while moshing and drinking. So back to the show, I'm quite caught up in a cold so my body is slowly sinking deep in a fever and numbness while on stage War Doves embark. Charles-Antoine who plays in Conflit Majeur is seen onstage as full-time said guitarist and on drums a guy named Jay while on bass and lead singer and second guitar, we have two girls respectively named Anja and Gaelle if not wrong. All together on stage they have a clean cut Motley Crue hair looking band look being less emo, simply dressed in their modern day fashion looks almost grungy yet just ordinary. But their music is not ordinary. Although I didn't know any songs they played and couldn't hear well the lyrics and other instruments due to a shitty soundscapes in the room, I can definitely press my word when saying it was fucking loud. So loud and heavy paced, that even with my cold knocking me half-assed out, I wobbled around and wiggled side-to-side unconsciously to their riffs and drum beats. I truly had a hard time staying in the room, my tiredness kept zooming me out of my head but at least their incredible set kept me going through the night. By their two last songs the singer had left her guitar aside and she gave her everything screaming and jumping on and on while uttering every note with such madness that my friend came to me saying, '' Mate it feels like a Rage Agains't the Machine show with the singer just hollering pleas agains't the mistreatment of indeginous people.'' He's seen the band so he knows what he's saying I believed him and even I caught a certain instrumental ressemblance by the end to songs in their self-titled album.
By the end of their set, everyone walked out and then people jived outside and danced and laughed and talked greatly. People hand out posters for a show in Terrebone at Parc Saint-Sacrament and I stare at my friend thinking why the fuck would anybody give me a poster when I'm broke as fuck barely paying the short terms amount of a sandwich and a pack of cigarette on which to live healtily and write endlessly covered by despair of daily struggles? But that not everyone knows and so I remind myself and just laugh it off highly voiced while my friend is looking around. I talk with Joni of Shirehead who's debut show is going on the 20th having in his ranks Jeremy who's a producer at the head of Sub River Records and playing drums for Booster Fawn. We discuss daily life, and his band and cool merch coming out real soon. After this my friend and I head out to get him something to eat and we stumble upon a boutique called Snatch which reminds me of The Snatchers so we stop there in honor of The Snatchers and by the time we come back after waiting for ever inside, we enter the basement to see Evergreen. Before entering, funnily enough, I shout out loud that I won't go to the Terrebonne show and a guy who was part of the flyers handling crew hears me and retorts that I should of course fucking go. Me and my friend laugh out loud! Inside, Evergreen having recently played along Truck Violence came onstage feeling confident and rejuvinated of an energy because they seemed stressed or tensed out the last time I'd seen em'. So they started with Gardening I believe, and until they release their highly anticipated release, unless you go to their shows titles won't mean much to you. After that, they called me onstage, I spoke of the Oasis reunion and altough I was full of nose shit, we sang together the begining of Wonderwall and once over we laughed and back I was in the crowd. The songs followed with intensity increasing and in the pit we kept on shoving on and on. Funnily enough, I'd recently loss me wallet, and on this very night again, my wallet that was in my left pocket was outted due to intense moshing and having received a couple of hits from all around, I toss aside and my friend Jonathan who's wearing my vest comes and says fuck there's no more wallet! Happily I found it back before the end of the show. Towards the end of the set, Evergreen send another invitation to join on stage and just shout or say what so ever and they then proceed to their two last numbers of the night before outing the stage. Jeremy stomps his guitar by the end of the show and others skadoozle around making noise and issuing more and more feedback assuring the band a number one spot in grunge looking sounding motherfuckers. Overall their performance was great, it seemed a bit hazy at a moment since I believe Matteo was just really feeling good and wanted to appreciate his time on stage so he was just giggling about general stuff, but the music was great, their intensity on set is never to be dissed and truly, their material is heavily awaited on streaming platforms and phsyical copies. Tonight, they had merch which was really fun to see people wearing they merch and I believe helped out the band to spread it's influence slowly but surely! One comment I'm bringing back though from also my review of em' with Truck Violence is, keep the show going because your sets are intense and I believe that there is a satisfaction to have at moshing constantly from beginning to end of the set or at least heaving constant music heard. Teens present at these shows are their for the thrill so unless you have a great word to issue and are about to then dedicate a song or play a acoustic song suddenly I firmly believe the band should just roll with the punches till the end!
By now, my sickness had taken over my mind and I was about to fall down tired and just feeling cold and hot and bloathed. So Jonathan and I decided it was time to leave so sadly I haven't seen The Snatchers, but rest assured I shall have to go to Terrebonne at the free show to see em'. A great fact is The Snatchers started on stage a year ago. They recently released a demo tape, which I can't put the link here since it's only in physical copy, but surely do go see them to get yourself one. But all this to say, they started lively last year. And in a year, they've proved their worth and I wish them more to come!
