Le Buzz, un sacré Buzz!
"The place is full man sorry" - the man at the door
"Oh nevermind that man, I'm here to write, and I haven't gotten high for a while so you better get me fucking in, I heard they were a hell of a trip!"
Now that's not how I got in nor what I said word for word, do not worry. But I did have to sell my soul as a journalist to be allowed with my friend to come in, because unbeknowst to me, the place was sold out. Minutes before, I was watching by the window a homeless get in a rant about pastries in a garbage inside an Ultramar. What seemed like a goldmine to him, was property by the law to the clerk.
"Fuck it asti je veux mes pastiches tabarnak déjà que tu veux pas je rentre mon vélo, pi la tu veux pas me donner la bouffe dans poubelle, heille criss"
As he went out, he dropped one. Antoine came out shortly after with food and alcohol. I proceed to tell the homeless that he dropped one on the floor, he on the otherside tells me it's too dirty. I think, well you picked it up in the fucking garbage, what does it matter at this point mate. Whatever, he's gone with two cigarettes in extra and now as we walk back, drinking a bottle of wine, thinkering about a night of debauchery that tailed us the night before, we sit on a bench besides the venue. We drink quite fast and we head in to pee and make our way close to the stage. But as I enter the room filled with an odour of labour, someone stops me.
"Yeah sorry man you and your friend can't come in, it's full."
"Oh okay well, perhaps if I tell you I'm here because I want to write something about the band The Buzz, the ones who just released an EP, the ones who got me thinking of Sun Ra mixed with Hawkind's exploration. You know who I'm taking of ?"
" Yeah I'm the guitarist and the other one plays the bass or piano. (I'm not too sure who was at the door at that moment)"
"Yeah well Sara told me it would be fucking great and all, so you think you can fit two delinquents of more? Luckily were not even wasted that bad, I ain't high on whatever the fuck it is and well I'm actually stocked to religiously listen to em'."
"Okay common' in."
We're in, we walk up, slide shoulders upon shoulders with the crowd who's filled the place. To my left, a girl sells jewelry and plans on giving all the money to Palestine. What a hero I think, finally someone who does more than just post about it on instagram. On stage, hops Chaleur Chaleur. A quintet of delusional dreamers who sing in french upon strict jazz standards executed geniusly! It was a great number.
But I came for the one and only Buzz, and for what I knew 10$ to get high musically and sonically was cheaper than many drugs I bought over the course of years. As they came on stage, only a trumpetist was up. He played, setteling down the mood, bringing us closer to the moon, I began to feel my body going numb. The guitarist embarked with a gleemy more subtle floyd chimes of notes. The keyboardist, bassist and drummer all followed and by then, the song was full blown, grooving at a Miles Davis tempo, although much more opened à la Sun Ra with some reverse guitar effect adding to the ethereal landscape they paved. They played I believe Nuages and Nuances from their new EP, with one of both songs having a funny story as of being, they recorded it all, and the computer shut down so they actually lost the recording. Luckily in a Facebook discussion someone had send a part of the recording containing the trumpet and maybe piano I believe to they took this only draft and recrafted the song like it was but kept the quality of the saved recording. These guys are talented and seems to want to share more authenticity than a certain branded product. They are set to explore, further than the moon, deeper than the roots of their instruments. They seem to seek the boundaries of what their body soul and instrument can reach to create a climax on stage! The audience was thrilled all along the performance that I can tell you. For a jazz show, they sold out the place and words goes around a lot of people seem to have noticed the band around Montreal. For their last number, they played us a cover of My Favorite Thing which is an old Traditional song which can be heard in The Sound of Music which was then sampled in Ariana Grande's 7 Rings which burrows from the traditional christmas song but can also be melodically heard through the piano as a certain Riders On The Storm lick. So as they started the song, I was convinced they were playing Riders on The Storm and as the song kept going the arrangement came and My Favorite Things or Seven Rings which is the song they jokingly referred as cover reference can be instantly recognized. The night ended, the place was packed and sweaty and joyful. Along their play, balloons were thrown and confettis opened, it was almost magical can I say so. Take a listen to their first newly outed self-titled EP, it will blow your mind!
