Evergreen, Scarlet Wives, Bad Objection, Revenant at l'Hémisphère Gauche 25th October
A night packed with surprise.
Punks have a tendency to raise hell over their beloved surroundings, out of sheer excitement or even simply to be punk. Youth tends to set no boundaries and hold their stance anywhere they go in order to prove their existence. At l’Hémisphère Gauche, those odd socks were all those in the same small place in order to support the artists or friends. The bands played in the following order, Evergreen, Scarlet Wives, Bad Objections, and Revenant.
To put it simply, Evergreen were ever amazing, raising the bar very high for Scarlet Wives. And sadly Scarlet Wives just didn’t make the cut, not because they weren’t good, but simply they didn’t tear apart the whole scene. Bad Objection had a great gig, hyping us up, demanding the crowd to sing along their anthemic punk choruses and just pour out all of what they had left, leading to Revenant who had this old schmuck vibe, and sadly their set was mostly noisy and dull in my opinion. They couldn't grasp the age difference between them and the crowd or simply that they were the last number and I was beginning to be tired.
So first was Evergreen, a young band influenced by the sheer rawness of grunge, the energy of punk rock and the fire that flames youthness. They had two cover songs and a couple of original songs. Sadly, we weren't too familiar with new songs but yet it was a great time to discover those upcoming new songs. But what really set them apart that night was the singer's energy, as he trimbaled his band through their heated performance. Matteo, clearly studied Cobain’s performances seeing how he played the riffs with sloppiness, wiggled his body up and down, left to right and screeched every word of the songs performed. The bandmates, Hans the bassist, Jeremie the drummer, and Tyler supporting on guitar, were just what was needed to fuel through all their incredible numbers. All this said, the greatest moment of their set came at the end, as Matteo had been wrestling a lot with his guitar, he brought the final blow by smashing it full heartedly upon the stage in front of all the riled up foes attending the spectacle. After a couple of hits, the guitar tore apart, and that was it, everybody in the room knew these young bastards were committed to delivering great shows. Everybody screamed, excitement and recklessness fueled everyone in the room for the rest of the show.
Next to come up was Scarlet Wives, a mix of punk, hard-rock music splattered with fairy dust, which was great but sadly didn’t get to shake the foundations strong enough especially after Evergreen who’d raised the bar pretty high. But yet, the girls (trio backed on the drums by Pedro (ex-Bad Objection drummer) delivered a great performance. Fast-forward a couple of minutes in between the sets, Bad Objection was stepping up the game, leading the crowd along punk riffs, mosh pits, and chanting anthemic choruses. Ricardo had us all following his every word and action as they tore apart every eardrum in the room. Hearing some of the songs of their first album, 3 Strikes You're Out, released this year was great and seeing their new drummer Cedric in action, accompanied by Chad on the bass, was great! To me these guys are like Motorhead simply a bit more refined, basically they are really great and energetic. Finally, the last act, Revenant, old rockers aka old schmucks in the scene were settled to close the night. I wasn’t impressed, I don’t know if the sound was left unattended, but the guitars just overthrew the performance and it felt like they were not with the right audience. But I’ve seen they are quite big but I had never heard them before, hopefully with more Rock N Roll acts on bill, they can shine brighter.
To sum the night, the place was packed, the cheerings echoed through the night, and Evergreen set the bar pretty high for a first performance. The rest made a good impression although some I would've love to see in a different context to see them shine more. Hopefully all those bands will have more music coming out pretty soon because their live performances tingled my curiosity to listen to them on record. Have a good one, hoping to see you guys at a local venue soon enough!
