Hot Girls Listen to Museums and so should all washouts
October 2nd, I wanted to go see le P'tit Belliveau at Quai des Brumes. Of course, it was sold out. So I was about to dip. But, But But, my friend Charlotte insisted we stay to watch live music. So what stands besides Quai des Brumes other than the mytical Escogriffe!
Going inside, we are greeted with a 20$ or PWYC, so we get our money out and reluctantly or rather unsurely we give it to the door gal and in we are. On stage, a girl with long curly black hair is swaying left to right with her grey guild motherfucking cool looking guitar. She sings out words, plays her guitar and enchants anyone who locks regards with her while the bassist dressed with an oversized green slick shirt is, well let's put it this way, making love to his bass as he chants out the groove. The drummer in the back is controlled, tamed yet gashed with a wildness that is subtle yet thrilling. The guitarist seemed straight out of sitcom was a melody virtuoso. He definitely knew a thing or two about harmonizing and adding variations to the chords the singer played. Together, the four musicians fought a relentless battle agains't time as they spewed their good vibes and great songs upon us the audience who seemed at first quite tired as it was Thursday. But as the songs went on more and more bodies were drained and dragged through the tsunamies of rythms and by the end of the set, everyone had indulged and dipped more than a toe in Museums trail of sheer psych rock music. I didn't know them at all, but I knew that from now on, I would be running wild through Montreal and who knows maybe I'd even have to hitch hike across Canada to see them at every single one of their shows. Ur Best is their latest single and I have to encourage every single reader to dig in. Although, I have to say, I think they have a greater energetic rendition of it live, for a supper or a calm evening or nap, Ur Best is the best fucking mellow psyched song to play. Tame Impala and more indie bands are definitely pillars of this sound we hear on Ur Best.
Afterwards came Bloom Effect, a trio band from Vancouver. They've got balls and great ideas. That's for sure. Their set was a blend of Joy Division, groovy 70's thumping melodies and bass rock grooves and some more psyched noize Lou Reed type shit. The guitarist had a Rickenbacker à la John Lennon model which of course got me by the balls before they even played a note. But, I don't know if the man thinks he's Liam Gallagher or perhaps Syd Barret, but his fucking guitar was not well mixed. Way too many highs or as some say, way to screechy and bright. Maybe it was the mix, who knows, I don't hate or blame no one. But I have to admit, many ears were on the verge of bleeding as they played. The guitarist even dared playing with feedback to fuck with us harder. What a ballsy guy, but I like it. Their music was great yet very loud. I do think they could have a tad bit more energy, but I do think even the musicians else than the guitarist were fucked by the high end sound emitted by the guitarist's amp. We had a hard time hearing the bass and the singers, who played bass, voice. If you've missed them, they are currently on tour across Canada and else, they surely will eventually come back to Montreal. To have a glimpse, take a listen to their new music titled Oscilon on spotify and every other platform where you grab your soundwaves.
But overall, the night was great. All bands who played deserve to be listened and seen and I wish them all the best as they climb their way up the ladder of corporate fame and fortune in the music business. I missed Seaver Band who opened up the night, but I do encourage y'all to go dig their music too on bandcamp if you are fans of Joy Division and more Berlinesque 70's industrial rock and whatever the fuck you want to call it. They remind me of Alix Ferns english version, older and a bit more conservative, more old Rock N' Roll sounding. Thanks and have a good day, night, week-end or else. The title of the articles comes from the merch released by the band Museums who printed who the phrase, Hot Girls Listen to Museums, for those wondering.
